EU deems US tariffs illegitimate

The European Commission stated on Monday (02/10) that the United States’ planned tariffs on steel and aluminum are “illegitimate and counterproductive,” arguing that “there is no justification” for such measures, according to an official statement.
“Imposing tariffs would be illegitimate and economically counterproductive, especially given the deeply integrated supply chains that the European Union and the United States have established through transatlantic trade and investment,” the Commission said.
The statement was issued after U.S. President Donald Trump signaled plans to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports.
“The European Union sees no justification for tariffs on its exports. We will respond to protect the interests of European businesses, workers, and consumers against unjustified measures,” the Commission warned.
The statement also emphasized that such tariffs would ultimately tax American citizens, raising costs for businesses and fueling inflation.
The Commission argued that the tariffs would increase “economic uncertainty” and could undermine “the efficiency and integration of global markets.”
The EU added that it has not received any formal notification regarding additional tariffs on its exports and will only take action once the full impact of the measures becomes clear.
