The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) welcomed the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock’s announcement of the official reopening of the European Union market for Brazilian chicken exports. The measure was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Suspended since the detection of a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) case in a commercial farm in Rio Grande do Sul—already resolved—the shipments to the European bloc will officially resume as of this Tuesday. The reopening follows prior confirmation given by the European Commission to Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro.

The announcement is the result of an intensive effort led by Minister Fávaro, together with Secretaries Luis Renato Rua (International Relations) and Carlos Goulart (Animal Health), and their teams, who worked to consolidate negotiations for the reinstatement of one of Brazil’s most important chicken export markets.

Between January and May—when the outbreak occurred—Brazilian chicken exports to the EU reached 125,300 tonnes, up 20.8% compared to the same period the previous year. Revenues totaled about US$386.3 million, an increase of 38% year-on-year.

With the official reopening, the industry expects exports to return to previous levels, with the possibility of growth due to the pent-up demand during the suspension.
