EU to Impose Tariffs on Low-Cost Imports

The European Union (EU) plans to charge a €2 tariff on billions of low-cost imports that enter the bloc’s internal market each year. The measure primarily targets China and would significantly harm online retailers such as Temu and Shein.
The Financial Times reported the news. Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič told the European Parliament on Tuesday (May 20) that he had proposed a handling fee to address the challenges posed by the 4.6 billion items imported into the EU annually.
The European Commission’s preliminary proposal includes a €2 fee on direct sales. Items shipped to warehouses would be taxed at €0.50.
Part of the revenue generated would cover the costs of additional customs inspections, while the rest would go to the EU’s budget.
Šefčovič vowed to tackle the surge in the volume of such goods, which he said has led to a rise in “dangerous and non-compliant products” and complaints from EU retailers about unfair competition.
