Even Given returns to the Suez Canal five months after blocking it

After passing through Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Felixstowe (UK), the Ever Given sailed to Asia, crossing the Suez Canal again five months after this 400-metre-long vessel hit bottom and blocked the two routes on the Egyptian interoceanic route.

On March 23, the container ship ran aground on its trip north, interrupting the canal’s flow and affecting more than 400 ships. The blockade of the trade route caused a major rupture in global logistics, which was already affected by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

After its release from the Suez Canal sands through operations involving various tugs and shore equipment, the mega-ship was taken to Great Bitter Lake for inspections. But the Ever Given was unable to continue its journey since legal actions brought by the Suez Canal Authority led to the seizure of the vessel.

The lawsuit was settled on July 7, when the ship’s owner, Shoei Kisen Kaisha, through his insurers, reached a compensation agreement with the channel authority.
