Farmers need financial support to adopt sustainable practices, says EU commissioner

While in São Paulo for the Global Agribusiness Forum (GAFF), organized by Datagro, European Union Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski emphasized that farmers need support and financial incentives, rather than severe restrictions, to adopt sustainable practices.
Wojciechowski acknowledged Brazil’s crucial role in global food security, noting the country’s consistent contribution even during challenging climatic conditions affecting agriculture. “We owe gratitude to Brazilian farmers,” he said.
When asked during a press conference about the potential postponement of the Green Deal, set to begin on January 1, 2025, Wojciechowski mentioned that the European Parliament has recently undergone elections. He noted that it would be necessary to wait for the new parliament members to deliberate on this possibility in the coming months.
The commissioner also pointed out that Green Deal regulations have already been adjusted in response to farmers’ demands, indicating that there is a precedent for possible revisions.
