The Federal Government officially announced on Friday (31) the launch of the public tender to resume construction of the Transnordestina Railway in Pernambuco. The announcement was made in Brasília by the Ministers of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho; Transport, Renan Filho; and Communications, Frederico Siqueira. Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lyra, Recife Mayor João Campos, and Senators Humberto Costa, Teresa Leitão, and Fernando Dueire participated virtually.
The bidding process provides for an investment of R$ 200 million to carry out works on a 73-kilometer stretch between the municipalities of Custódia and Arcoverde. This section, identified as Lot SPS-04, is part of the strategic route connecting Salgueiro to the Port of Suape and also covers the municipalities of Sertânia and Buíque.
The resumption of the Pernambuco branch is considered a priority by the current administration and has been included in the new Growth Acceleration Program (PAC). “We, the people of Pernambuco, are very grateful to Minister Renan Filho and President Lula for having prioritized the Transnordestina project from the very beginning as part of the public policies implemented through the new PAC,” said Minister Silvio Costa Filho.
Costa Filho added that once completed, the railway will increase container handling capacity and operations at the Port of Suape, strengthening the state’s entire production chain. “It will boost São Francisco’s fruit sector, Araripe’s gypsum production, develop fish farming in the Sertão do Itaparica region, and drive growth in Salgueiro in the Central Sertão,” he emphasized.
Transport Minister Renan Filho also celebrated Pernambuco’s reintegration into the Transnordestina project. “Today marks a turning point in the history of the Northeast’s development, as President Lula decided to reintegrate Pernambuco into the region’s growth strategy by funding this project with public resources,” he said.
The works on this lot are expected to generate around 6,000 direct and indirect jobs, with a contract term of 57 months.
In Pernambuco, 179 kilometers of the railway have already been completed, representing 38% of the total works in the state. Renan also confirmed that tenders for lots SPS-05 and SPS-07 will be launched next year. “SPS stands for Salgueiro and the Port of Suape. Today we’re publishing SPS-04, and in the first half of next year, we’ll release SPS-07 and then SPS-05,” he explained.
Strategic project for the Northeast
The Transnordestina is considered the Federal Government’s main structural project in Brazil’s Northeast, with a total estimated investment of R$ 14.9 billion. Once completed, the railway will span over 1,200 kilometers, connecting Eliseu Martins (PI) to the Port of Pecém (CE), with the Pernambuco branch extending to the Port of Suape and crossing 53 municipalities in total.
The project’s main objective is to reduce logistics costs, increase cargo transport capacity — especially for grains and minerals — and promote economic development across the region.
