Federal Revenue Foils Attempt to Smuggle 51,000 kg of Illegal Wood to the USA

On March 13th, the Federal Revenue seized 51,000 kg of illegal wood at the Port of Pecém, in São Gonçalo do Amarante, in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza. The cargo originated from Pará and was destined for the United States.

The inspection focused on two containers labeled as containing exotic wood for export, but which actually contained native Ipe wood.

During the operation, the Federal Revenue requested an assessment from the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) servers, which confirmed that the wood lacked a valid environmental license or permit for exportation.

The cargo was seized and handed over to Ibama, the agency responsible for taking the appropriate legal measures in that case.

In December 2023, the Revenue prevented the illegal export of 25,000 kg of wood of the same species, with the same origin and destination as this one.
