Focused on efficiency, safety, and sustainability, Ferroport—operator of the iron ore terminal at the Port of Açu, located in the municipality of São João da Barra in northern Rio de Janeiro—has invested approximately R$300 million over the past three years in equipment modernization and has been recording operational improvements. As a result, the company ensures high equipment availability and greater predictability in port operations for the storage and shipment of iron ore produced by Anglo American.
The product is extracted from a mine in Conceição de Mato Dentro (Minas Gerais) and transported via a 529-kilometer slurry pipeline—the longest in the world—crossing 33 municipalities to reach the port. At the terminal, the ore undergoes filtration, is stored, and then exported by ship to various countries and continents.
Driven by these new investments, including the training and development of the local workforce, Ferroport reached a historic milestone last year of 200 million tonnes shipped since operations began in 2014. Connecting Brazilian mineral resources to global markets, the company is currently among the terminals with the lowest average vessel turnaround times in the country, with indicators below the Brazilian average according to Antaq. It also ranks among the leading iron ore ports in Brazil, holding 4th place nationally.
At Intermodal South America 2026, taking place from April 14 to 16 at Distrito Anhembi in São Paulo, Ferroport will present its business model at Stand G053, alongside the Port of Açu and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The highlights will include solutions for efficient port asset management, with a focus on safety, innovation, and digitalization.
“Intermodal is an excellent opportunity to strengthen relationships with our stakeholders and share information about our sustainable growth, which has consolidated Ferroport as an efficient, reliable, and competitive logistics operator on the global stage,” said Luiz Francisco Silva, Ferroport’s General Operations Manager.
Logistics at Ferroport is data-driven, synchronizing yard operations, automated equipment, and maritime activities. In its pursuit of innovation and digital solutions, the company internally developed projects such as Dockflow, which supports maneuver scheduling and vessel sequencing. It has also adopted contaminant detection systems using computer vision to identify unwanted materials before shipment, preventing disruptions and ensuring quality. Additionally, the company uses aerial and underwater drones for inspections, meeting the demands of global export logistics.
GPTW certification and top ESG ranking at Antaq Awards
On the social front, Ferroport—responsible for more than 600 direct and indirect jobs in São João da Barra and the surrounding region—invests approximately R$8 million annually in education, sports, and cultural projects. The company has also been recognized for the fourth time as a Great Place to Work (GPTW), achieving an overall score of 92, the highest in its history, with 93% employee participation in the workplace climate survey.
Ferroport also secured 1st place in the 2025 Antaq Awards in the Private Use Terminals category, handling more than 5 million tonnes per year. The result recognizes the company’s environmental performance and reinforces the evolution of its operations. In 2024, the company ranked second and rose to first place this year. The award ceremony took place in February in Brasília during the 10th edition of the Antaq Awards, an initiative of the National Waterway Transport Agency that promotes technical excellence and ESG best practices in the sector.
In addition to the award, Ferroport improved its ESG rating under the methodology of consultancy ERM (Environmental Resources Management), reaching its highest score ever: 9.60. This milestone highlights the consistency of its strategy and the integration of sustainability into its business model, reinforcing its commitment to increasingly efficient, responsible operations aligned with industry best practices.
