The Parliamentary Front for Agriculture (FPA) is awaiting a meeting with maritime transporters – the shipowners – to debate the container crisis.
A meeting is scheduled to take place between November 11th and 12th. “Dialogue with shipowners is the key point. It’s a very concentrated sector. There are five companies worldwide. We are in a situation of dialogue and pressure”, said the president of the FPA Infrastructure and Logistics Commission, federal deputy Arnaldo Jardim (Cidadania-SP).
According to the congressman, the front has already held meetings with members of the Ministries of Economy, Infrastructure, and Agriculture. He said that the executive branch is assisting with articulation with shipowners. “We want forecasts – for the reinsertion of Brazil in priority routes, resumption of routes, and container availability”, defended Jardim.
He also criticized the maritime transport companies that are taking advantage of the pandemic crisis to maximize profits, and he promised pressure shipowners.
“Some have focused on high-profit routes seeking greater advantages. We want to clean up. We are not passively watching this and we are going to raise the tone, demanding definitions regarding the route, availability of ships and containers for export”, he argued.
Jardim reiterated that impacts are already being observed in the sector due to the tightness in the supply of containers and delays in shipments.
“We have several cases of products that were ready to be shipped and that had difficulties in being packed in containers. There are not enough numbers. Others were packed and the ship’s voyage was canceled. In these cases, the contracted freight was revoked”, said the deputy. He highlighted that there are also losses in the internalization of agricultural inputs.
