The main French farmers’ union, FNSEA, has called for a nationwide protest on September 26. The demonstration is against the trade pact between the European Union and Mercosur, the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, and the “import of products that do not comply with French regulations.”

Arnaud Rousseau, the union’s secretary-general, argued that the entry of cheaper Latin American products produced under different standards could harm domestic production, according to reports by Reuters and EFE.

The farmers’ announcement comes amid a wave of street protests against austerity measures in France and a moment of political instability, after the National Assembly ousted Prime Minister François Bayrou and President Emmanuel Macron appointed Sébastien Lecornu to the post.

The FNSEA’s call to action coincides with the EU-Mercosur trade pact entering the ratification phase in the 27 European Union parliaments.
