Hapag-Lloyd to impose surcharge on Manaus cargo due to low Amazon River levels

Shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has announced it will implement a low water surcharge (LWS) for cargo originating from or destined for the Port of Manaus, due to current conditions on the Amazon River.
“Given the continued drop in water levels on the Amazon River, we are implementing a Low Water Surcharge (LWS) for cargo to and from the Port of Manaus, Brazil. The LWS is necessary to offset the increased costs and operational complexities associated with navigating under low-water conditions on the river,” the German company explained.
The surcharge will be USD 1,000 per TEU. For cargo originating from or destined for Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, the LWS will apply starting August 21, 2025.
For goods shipped to or from North America and Latin America, the surcharge will take effect on September 1, 2025.
“We will continue to monitor water levels on the Amazon River and adjust the implementation date if the start of the dry season is delayed. In that case, a new announcement will be published 30 days in advance.”
