Imported Tires Capture 70% of Brazil’s Replacement Market

Imported tires continue to gain ground in Brazil’s replacement market and now account for 70% of sales in the segment. The figures come from ANIP, the association representing domestic tire manufacturers, which now account for 30% of replacement tire sales.
In 2019, the balance was reversed, with domestic manufacturers accounting for 66% and imports for 34%. From January through August, imports rose 58.3% to 34.2 million tires. Moving in the opposite direction, sales of domestically manufactured tires to the replacement market fell 13.3%, totaling 14.6 million units over the eight months.
“We are witnessing the destruction of Brazil’s tire industry, and this will have serious consequences for the country. This is more than just a fluctuation in sales,” says Rodrigo Navarro, president of ANIP.
He adds that Brazilian manufacturers are steadily losing ground to imported products, many of which, according to the executive, are sold under unfair competitive conditions.
“If this trend continues, we will put jobs, investment and the ability to manufacture an essential product in Brazil at risk, in an economy that relies heavily on road transportation,” the ANIP president says.
