Israel Strikes Houthis at Port Controlled by the Group in Yemen

The Israeli military attacked Houthi targets at the port of Hodeidah, Yemen, on Monday (21st), in its latest strike against the Iran-backed militants, who have been targeting ships bound for Israel and launching missiles at the country.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the military was “responding forcefully to any attempt to restore previously targeted terrorist infrastructure.”

Houthi-run TV station Al Masirah reported on Monday that a series of strikes on the port was underway, but did not provide further details.

In a statement, the Israeli military said the targeted port had been used “among other things, to transfer weapons from the Iranian regime, which the Houthis then use to carry out terrorist attacks against the State of Israel and its allies.”

Since the start of Israel’s war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in October 2023, the Houthis, aligned with Iran, have attacked vessels in the Red Sea in what they claim are acts of solidarity with the Palestinians.

Israel responded with airstrikes against the Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, including the key port of Hodeidah.

“As I made clear, Yemen’s fate is the same as Tehran’s. The Houthis will pay a heavy price for launching missiles at the State of Israel,” Katz said.

In early July, the Houthis claimed responsibility for an attack on the Greek-owned ship Eternity C, which, according to maritime authorities, killed four of the 25 people on board.

In May, the United States announced a surprise agreement with the Houthis, under which it agreed to halt a bombing campaign in exchange for an end to attacks on ships—although the group stated that the deal did not include protection for Israel.
