Itajaí Port received seven Roro vessels this year

This year the Port of Itajaí has received seven RoRo vessels and is expected to handle more in the last two months of 2018. The port has already handled 13,000 vehicles this year and is forecast to be able to handle 40,000 units within the next few years.

APM Terminals Itajai is working to diversify away from solely container handling and has made inroads with a new agreement with General Motors and auto car carriers “K” Line and MOL while also boosting container volume.
In recent years APM Terminals Itajai has lost cargo to Portonave, operating on a greenfield site (which is cheaper owing to lower labor costs), and to Porto Itapoa. Portonave is across the Itajai-Acu River in Navegantes from the APM Terminal facility, and Porto Itapoa, run by a consortium that includes Hamburg Sud, is roughly 160 kilometers away.
Itajai this year has received seven roll-on, roll-off vessels and is slated to handle more through November and December. The terminal will have handled about 13,000 vehicles by year end and aims to ramp up its handling by 40,000 vehicles annually over the next few years.
GM Chevrolet has begun importing vehicles for the south and southeast regions of Brazil through its 60,000 square meter facility in Joinville — 58 miles from Itajai. The facility, opened in 2020, was originally focused on producing powertrain components for domestically sold Chevrolet vehicles.
APM Terminals Itajai’s container volume is also rebounding, with volume in October doubling from the same period last year, to 38,717 TEU. That follows 40,695 TEU of volume in August, the stronger monthly traffic since 2012. Container traffic through the terminal is up 40 percent over the last year, to slightly less than 400,000 TEU, tracking close to its record throughput of 416,000 TEU in 2012.
The attraction of two deepseas services — the Brazex service to the US Gulf and Caribbean as well as the SamWaf service to South Africa and Mercosur trade bloc coastal service — have helped drive the growth.
Ro-ro rebound
Heder Cassiano Moritz, the executive director for the Itajai Port Authority (IPA) said that the ro-ro business was “very welcome” and was a greatly appreciated addition to cargo handling for Itajai, and the additional liner services were also a “massive booster,” especially after Itajai has lost so much cargo in recent years, much of it to Itapoa and Portonave.
“Around the year 2000 there was a regular service from Grimaldi and it lasted around a year, but nothing since then in Itajai,” said Robert Grantham, a director for consultancy Solve Shipping and former commercial director for IPA.
He said Peugeot imported vehicles but stopped after opening their own plan in Rio de Janeiro. With ro-ro traffiic rebounding, GM could tap Itaji or Itapoa, Gratham said.
Sources in Itajai and Joinville, where GM has several facilities, told JOC.com that GM is also keen to run a few “experimental” calls at Porto Itapoa, the container handling rival to APM Terminals Itajai, but nothing concrete has been timetabled yet.
Joinville is the industrial hub and largest city — with about 520,000 inhabitants — of the wealthy southern state of Santa Catarina and is a good location from which to distribute automobiles around the south (25 million people) and southeast (82 million) regions of Brazil. These include the wealthy states of Rio Grande, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro as well as Santa Catarina.
Other smaller container terminals struggling to compete with international players, such as DP World (at DP World Santos) and Terminal Link (at Brasil Terminal Portuaria in Santos), have also diversified to survive, venturing into warehousing and much more less-than-containerload cargoes (Rodrimar, Ecoporto Santos, and Libra Terminais) and even handling live cattle for export (Ecoporto Santos), although that has since been curtailed after animal rights protests.
Other ports in Brazil that handle ro-ro cargo include Santos, Paranagua, Rio Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Vitoria, and Salvador.
Porto de Itajaí recebe mais 1,6 mil veículos importados da General Motors
O Porto de Itajaí recebeu o décimo segundo navio com veículos importados da montadora General Motors (GM/Chevrolet).
A embarcação atracou às 09:00 horas no berço 3 (porto público), e está sendo operado pela APM Terminals (empesa arrendatária do Porto de Itajaí), utilizando-se do recinto alfandegado do porto público.
Trata-se do navio de bandeira panamenha Galveston Highway. Com 199 metros de comprimento por 32 de boca (largura), trouxe a bordo 1686 veículos modelos Equinox e Tracker.
O navio pertence ao Armador K-Line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha LTDA) e partiu do Porto de Altamira, no México, onde foram embarcadas as unidades.
De acordo com informações da Gerência de Operações da Superintendência do Porto de Itajaí, as operações podem encerrar ainda hoje por volta de 21 horas, e cerca de 100 veículos poderão ser movimentados por hora. Ao término das operações, o navio Galveston Highway segue roteiro para o Porto de Santos, litoral de São Paulo.
A primeira atracação “teste” aconteceu no dia 09 de junho, e naquele dia, 500 veículos modelo Cruise desembarcaram pelo navio de bandeira do Panamá, APOLLON HIGHWAY.
Depois disso somaram-se mais nove operações “testes”, e no dia 01 de novembro, o Porto de Itajaí recebeu o Navio de bandeira panamenha, Diamond Highway (11ª atracação), onde desembarcaram 1688 veículos modelos Camaro, Tracker e Equinox chegando a marca de 12.413 unidades.
Com a chegada de hoje do navio Galveston Highway, o somatório total é de 14.099 veículos importados da montadora General Motors/Chevrolet.
Esse tipo de movimentação em portos é conhecido pelo sistema ROLL ON ROLL OFF – quando os veículos são conduzidos para fora do navio e encaminhados para uma área primária do porto. Como praxe, os veículos descem por uma rampa sendo conduzidos ao Armazém 03 onde recebem vistoria por parte de profissionais da Gerência de Operação Portuária. Em seguida se deslocam até o RAC – Recinto Alfandegado Contíguo e no local são carregados para as “Cegonheiras” e por fim, transportados aos seus locais de destino.
Recentemente o contrato foi assinado com a APM Terminals para a vigência de um ano.
Desde março, membros responsáveis da Superintendência do Porto de Itajaí, Gerência e diretores de Relações Governamentais da General Motors no Brasil – Gestão Logística (TEGMA), diretores da APMT de Itajaí, diretores da Secretaria de Estado de Desenvolvimento Econômico Sustentável e Prefeitura Municipal de Itajaí através das Secretaria Municipal de Desenvolvimento Econômico, Emprego e Renda, da Fazenda e Procuradoria Geral do Município realizaram reuniões em busca do procedimento correto para a operação fluir da melhor maneira possível, não afetando as demais operações no cais público e nem afetando o trânsito de Itajaí para o momento de transferência dos veículos para o RAC.
A montadora GM – Chevrolet, é pioneira no Brasil no seguimento de transporte marítimo de veículos.
Depois de passaram pelo serviço de nacionalização tem destino programado para as regiões Sul e Sudeste do país.
O Porto de Itajaí tem histórico associado a estas operações de cargas ROLL ON – ROLL OFF quando nas décadas de 1980, 1990 e 2000, operaram com os principais Armadores que atuam nessa área.
Para o mês de dezembro, a Superintendência do Porto de Itajaí e a APM Terminals ainda serão comunicadas pela montadora General Motors quanto ao cronograma de datas prevista de novos desembarques.
Acredita-se que até o final deste ano, possivelmente o Porto de Itajaí receba mais de 16 mil veículos importados pela montadora GM.
