Itaqui handles 16.6 million tons, expands cargo flows through Brazil’s Northern Arc

The Port of Itaqui, in Maranhão state, handled 16.58 million metric tons of cargo in the first half of 2026, strengthening its position as one of the main logistics corridors in Brazil’s Northern Arc.

Monthly throughput rose from 2.09 million metric tons in January to 3.21 million metric tons in June, an increase of 53.5%.

Dry bulk accounted for the largest share of cargo handled during the period, totaling 11.97 million metric tons. Soybeans were the port’s main cargo, with 8.5 million metric tons moved.

Liquid bulk reached 3.86 million metric tons, driven mainly by petroleum products for the domestic market, which accounted for 2.38 million metric tons.

General cargo totaled 755,700 metric tons, led by pulp, with 702,900 metric tons handled.
