Week 202549

The Port of Itaqui has reached a new milestone in its logistics trajectory. Even before the end of the year, the volume handled in 2025 has already surpassed the entire result of 2024, consolidating the period as the second largest in the port’s history. As of November 27, 34.1 million tonnes had been recorded, slightly above the 34.03 million handled the previous year.

The result was consolidated by the operation of the vessel Torm Gitte at berth 106, which handled more than 109,000 tonnes of S10 diesel, helping to raise the annual total. The performance reinforces Itaqui’s position as the main public port of the Northern Arc and a strategic asset for the flow of national production.

The growth seen in 2025 is a direct result of progress in strategic segments. Soybeans have already surpassed 15 million tonnes—2 million more than last year—confirming the recovery of the flow affected by the drop in the 2024 corn harvest. Fertilizers have also shown strong growth: by November, Itaqui had already exceeded the total volume of 2024, reaching 4.14 million tonnes, above the 4.03 million registered the previous year, confirming the segment’s continued expansion.

Coal recorded a significant leap, handling more than double the previous year’s volume, driven by the reactivation of volatile matter (VM) for the power generation system. Liquid bulk stored in bonded warehouses also saw expressive growth of just over 30% compared to 2024, fueled by the expansion of Ship-to-Ship operations, which enhance logistical efficiency and optimize berth utilization.

These results are also reflected in vessel traffic. Throughout 2025, Itaqui has already received 930 ships, a number expected to grow with operations planned for December, approaching the total of 986 vessels recorded last year.

The expectation is that the port will close 2025 with even more impressive figures, potentially nearing the historical record set in 2023.

EMAP president Orquelina Costa highlighted the importance of the performance: “This record demonstrates Itaqui’s strength as strategic infrastructure for the country. The performance in 2025 confirms our team’s commitment to efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. We are keeping the port competitive, safe, and prepared to continue growing and contributing to the development of Maranhão and Brazil.”

With positive performance across all major segments and expectations of additional operations through December, the Port of Itaqui ends the year with results that reinforce its relevance to national logistics and to the production chains that rely on its infrastructure.
