Japan opens market to Brazilian animal fat products, boosting recycling sector exports

Japan has authorized the import of products based on poultry, pork, and beef fat from Brazil, opening a new and promising market for the animal recycling sector. The sanitary negotiation was concluded between the Brazilian and Japanese governments, with the participation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE). The ingredients used in the manufacture of animal feed and pet food can now be exported to one of the most demanding markets in the world.
The trade opening is also the result of the work of Brazilian Renderers, a partnership between the Brazilian Association of Animal Recycling (ABRA) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil). In May 2024, the project promoted Business Connection Japan, held at the Brazilian Embassy in Tokyo during the Asia Mission. The business round brought together 15 Japanese companies interested in Brazilian animal recycling products, with a focus on quality, sanitary safety, and supply potential for the Japanese market.
According to MAPA, with 125 million inhabitants, Japan is the third-largest economy in the world and an important partner of Brazilian agribusiness. In 2024, it was the 7th largest destination for Brazil’s agricultural exports, with shipments totaling US$3.3 billion. From January to July 2025, the exported volume has already reached US$1.8 billion. The inclusion of animal fats in this flow also consolidates Brazil as a supplier of animal-origin raw materials for pet and livestock nutrition, a sector in which the country excels in terms of sanitary and technological excellence of its flours, fats, palatabilizers, hemoderivatives, and hydrolyzed proteins.
