Maritime terminals challenge shipping companies over port auctions

Regarding the dispute over the port privatization model, ABTP (Brazilian Association of Port Terminals) brought arguments in favor of its position to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) and the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The entity questions the participation of shipping companies in the auction.
The fear of port operators is, in particular, the shipping giants MSC and Maersk.
“The indiscriminate and unregulated participation of economic groups that participate in the maritime transport of containers, the so-called shipowners, in these bidding processes can, in the medium and long term, generate freight increases, reduce the flow routes of Brazilian cargo, and cause an increase in logistics chain costs in general due to anti-competitive practices,” says ABTP’s CEO, Jesualdo Silva, who met with Minister Marcelo Sampaio.
The sector claims that the concentration of terminals in the hands of shipowners can cause cargo to be directed to the shipowners’ own terminals, discriminating against the rest of the market.
For the president of ABTP, the so-called “self preferring can lead to the flow of cargo to ports further away from the production site, among other imbalances.
