In May of this year, Mauritania — an Arab country located in Africa — recorded a significant 76% increase in purchases of Brazilian products compared to the same month in the previous year. According to data from Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Brazilian exports to Mauritania reached USD 25.4 million in May, up from USD 14.5 million in the same period of 2022.
The main driver behind this surge in Brazilian exports was a sharp rise in sugar shipments, Brazil’s most exported product to Mauritania. In May, Brazil shipped USD 22.5 million worth of sugar to the country, representing a 95.6% increase compared to the USD 11.5 million exported in May of the previous year. Meat exports also saw a significant boost, rising from USD 1.9 million to USD 2.4 million — a 26.3% increase.
In addition to these key items, Brazil also exported smaller volumes of other products to Mauritania, including food preparations based on flour, measuring instruments and machines, parts for radio detection devices, polyethylene bags, as well as vegetable textile fibers and tow.
On the other hand, there were no recorded exports from Mauritania to Brazil in May. However, the country does occasionally export to Brazil, albeit in small volumes. Between January and May this year, Brazil imported a total of just USD 19,000 from Mauritania. These imports included equipment, clothing, and optical instruments. During the same period, Brazilian exports to Mauritania totaled USD 85.3 million.
This increase in trade reflects a potential strengthening of the economic partnership between the two countries.
