Tarcisio de Freitas, the Minister of Infrastructure, issued a permit for the Bemisa mining firm to construct and operate a 717-kilometer railroad between Curral Novo in Piau and the Port of Suape, in the Recife Metropolitan Region, last week.
The minister also initiated the public consultation for the removal of Cocaia Island from the Suape Organized Port area, which will enable the handling of around 20 million tons of ore through Suape.
if given permission to leave the port’s polygonal area, the island will be eligible for housing a private iron ore terminal, thus enabling the construction of a railroad connecting Piaí state to the wharf in Pernambuco.
The project is expected to provide thousands of jobs for Pernambuco, with a proposed investment of R$ 5.7 billion.
The Bemisa group, one of the largest in the country in the field of extracting export minerals, is the private investor selected by the Government of Pernambuco, in 2019, to ship the ore through Suape.
The company, based in Minas Gerais, formalized its interest in making the railroad available to Minfra on September 2nd, 2021.
