New Rail Operations Center at Port of Santos Expands Cargo Capacity on São Paulo Coast

The Port of Santos has inaugurated a new Integrated Operational Control Center (CCOI), officially opened on Tuesday (30) by Brazil’s Minister of Transport, George Santoro. The facility will bring together the four railway concessionaires that operate rail access to the port, enabling unified operational planning and improving cargo transport efficiency.

The project is part of a R$2 billion investment in railway infrastructure, which includes the construction of six new rail yards and upgrades to the rail network serving the port. The initiative aims to increase operational capacity, reduce logistics costs, and shorten train transit times.

According to the minister, integrating rail operations will enhance rail transport’s competitiveness, reduce urban traffic conflicts, and reduce the number of trucks circulating in the cities of Santos and Cubatão.

The infrastructure upgrades will also allow trains up to 2,400 meters long—more than double the current length of rail convoys—to operate, significantly increasing the volume of cargo transported per trip.

According to Brazil’s Ministry of Transport, the project is expected to more than double the port’s rail cargo handling capacity over the next decade, reaching approximately 150 million metric tons per year. The company responsible for the project also estimates that operational improvements will reduce train travel times by about 2.5 hours.
