A joint inspection operation involving the Environmental Management Department of the Santos Port Authority (APS), the Port Guard, and Cetesb stopped trucks on Wednesday (18) along Avenida Perimetral, aiming to verify the pollutant emission levels of the vehicles.
Port Guard agents conducted random stops, allowing Cetesb technicians to carry out specialized tests, including black smoke analysis, colorimetric verification of Arla 32 (an automotive liquid reductant agent), and measurement of particulate levels in the exhaust smoke.
Of the ten vehicles inspected, two received notifications for environmental compliance. The Port Guard also issued one traffic violation citation. The initiative is educational, granting drivers up to 60 days to bring their vehicles into compliance and avoid environmental fines, which range from R$ 2,221.20 to R$ 17,769.60.
During the operation, the APS Environmental Management Department distributed educational leaflets. The campaign aims to raise awareness and educate drivers on the importance of preventive maintenance to reduce black smoke emissions and improve the quality of life in the city.
In addition to environmental impact, black smoke — mainly composed of toxic carbon particles — poses serious health risks. Inhalation can cause respiratory diseases, weakened immunity, infections, nausea, headaches, and nervous system intoxication.
Black smoke is emitted by diesel-powered vehicles with engine problems. This indicates that the fuel is not being fully burned during combustion, and the vehicle requires maintenance.
