Paraguay resumes import of chicken and eggs from Rio Grande do Sul

Paraguay has resumed, this week, the import of poultry products from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

According to the newspaper La Nación, the suspension occurred in the second half of May, following the detection of an avian influenza outbreak in the municipality of Montenegro, in Rio Grande do Sul.

Resolution No. 880, issued by the National Animal Health and Quality Service (Senacsa), cancels the previous decision and authorizes new imports.

Paraguay imports products such as eggs and chicken meat from Brazil, as well as live birds for restocking local farms.

The resumption comes at a time when, according to the established sanitary protocol, the outbreak in Montenegro has been declared eradicated. This designation typically occurs after at least four weeks without new reported cases.

Below is a historical overview of poultry meat exports from Paranaguá Port. The chart was prepared using DataLiner data:

During the suspension period, Paraguay continued to import poultry goods from other parts of Brazil. Sanitary surveillance in areas such as the Brazilian side of the Friendship Bridge was reinforced to prevent the irregular entry of products.

Argentina, on the other hand, chose to entirely suspend purchases of chicken, eggs, and related products produced in Brazil. The lifting of the ban has not yet been confirmed but is expected to happen in the coming weeks.

It is worth recalling, however, that the consumption of meat or eggs, when properly handled and cooked, does not pose risks to human health.

Like Brazil, Paraguay exports chicken and eggs to markets both within and outside the continent. The neighboring country has so far only reported suspected avian flu cases, which were later ruled out.
