Executives from the Paraná-based cooperative Coamo were in Florianópolis this Monday (25) to announce the construction of a new port in Itapoá, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina. In a meeting with Governor Jorginho Melo, they revealed that the goal is to begin operating the terminal in early 2030.
The group is investing R$3 billion in the 43-hectare site, which will feature three berths and is expected to handle 11 million tonnes per year. The facility will be able to operate LPG, bulk cargo, liquid fuels, and fertilizers.
Coamo already operates at the Port of Paranaguá in Paraná but faces frequent bottlenecks to ship its grain production, including soybeans, corn, and wheat. According to the cooperative’s CEO, Airton Galinari, factors such as the deepening of the Babitonga Bay and the duplication of highways SC-416 and SC-417 were decisive for the investment.
The project is expected to employ approximately 2,000 workers during construction and create around 1,000 permanent jobs upon completion.
