Paranaguá container terminal handles drill rig for construction of Brazil’s tallest planned building

The Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP) has received a hydraulic drilling rig that will be used in the foundation works of what is set to become Brazil’s tallest building, planned for construction on the coast of Santa Catarina state.

The equipment, a MAIT CFA36 model imported from Italy, arrived at the terminal aboard a roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel before being transported to the construction site. The rig is unique in Brazil and is considered one of the largest and most powerful in its class worldwide.

Weighing approximately 130 metric tons, the drilling rig is designed for continuous flight auger (CFA) piling and can drill to depths of up to 50 meters, with a maximum diameter of 1,500 millimeters. It has a maximum nominal torque of 35,000 kgf/m and is powered by a Caterpillar diesel engine rated at about 571 kW (765 horsepower).

The MAIT CFA36 is equipped with electronic monitoring systems for operational parameters, automatic leveling and a variable-gauge undercarriage, enabling high performance even under complex site conditions. With greater capacity than similar equipment available in the domestic market, the rig is expected to increase productivity and reduce overall construction time.

TCP said it is equipped to handle project cargo, which requires complex operations and customized logistics planning. Such cargo can include helicopters, large agricultural machinery, buses, excavators and harvesters, as well as other oversized equipment that exceeds standard cargo dimensions.

These operations require prior technical studies, designated handling areas, specialized equipment and coordinated efforts across multiple operational teams, the terminal said.
