A simulation of a serious accident in the hold of a ship mobilized safety teams at the Port of Paranaguá. The exercise, held on Monday (29), was part of an unprecedented rescue training organized by Portos do Paraná, with the support of more than 40 professionals from the Fire Department, Rocha Terminais Logísticos, Rochamar Agência Marítima, and Ogmo (Labor Management Entity).

The drill on board the ship is part of the schedule of simulations under Portos do Paraná’s Mutual Aid Plan (PAM). “We need to rehearse, test, and train so that, when something eventually happens, we already have all the criteria and procedures well established, ensuring greater efficiency in the response,” explained occupational health and safety specialist Felipe Zacharias.

The focus of the exercise was to test and define rescue methods in cases of accidents on ships without cranes, such as the Uranus, which was used as the training scenario. The absence of lifting equipment required different approaches. The simulation took place in one of the ship’s holds, where the injured worker was represented by a dummy.

The Fire Department provided first aid on site and carried out the rescue using ropes, hoisting the victim 20 meters up to the deck. In the next stage, the victim was removed using the winch system, which is normally employed to lift supplies onto the ship.

“Training inside a ship is completely different from our daily operations. Moreover, when we train together, it becomes much easier to respond effectively to real emergencies,” highlighted Everton Soares de Oliveira, commander of the 1st Company of the Paranaguá Fire Department.

Rocha, a PAM signatory, provided the ship for the exercise. “Every training session is very important, especially when it’s hands-on. This type of daily practice reinforces our commitment to people’s safety,” said Alex Lanza, Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality manager at Rocha.

Simulations
PAM events are regularly carried out along the port area, both by Portos do Paraná and by the plan’s signatories. In May this year, an exercise was held in Paranaguá involving a train, a bus, and a car. The drill, organized by the 8th Military Fire Brigade, was supported by Portos do Paraná, the coastal SAMU emergency service, Rumo Logística, the Municipal Guard, Civil Defense, and the Military Police.

The port authority’s role was to activate PAM member companies to support the Fire Department and the affected company, in this case, Rumo, in responding to the incident.
