On Sept. 28, the Port of Pecém resumed export operations of fruits to Mediterranean countries, particularly focusing on the markets of Spain and Italy. The line is operated by the European shipping company MSC.

In addition to calling at the main ports in the Mediterranean, the service is also the only one that allows the export of fruit between a terminal in northeastern Brazil and Italy. Since early this Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1,300 tonnes of melon, watermelon, mango, and grapes produced in the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, and Bahia have been shipped.

In total, 51 40-foot containers or 102 TEUs will be shipped.

The continuity of the service was celebrated by the manager of port businesses at Pecém, Raul Viana.

“We are very pleased with the upkeep of this service that connects Pecém directly with ports in Spain and Italy for the fourth year in a row. This is the result of a joint effort by the port authority, the shipping company, and the customers that allows us to continue with this service, even amid adversities and logistical bottlenecks,” he said.

Middle Eastern Markets

Daniel Soares, manager of the MSC Fortaleza branch, also stressed that exporting fruits from Pecém to Europe could become a bridge to markets in the Middle East.

“We have the option of transshipping the fruit to the Middle East through this service that originates in Pecém. It is possible to tranship from the port of Barcelona, Spain, to the ports of King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia, and Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, using a connection in the port of Barcelona, Spain. This is a service that establishes direct flow to the Brazilian fruit farming industry,” he explained.
