The Swiss multinational group Fracht Log has invested approximately R$105 million in a modern cold cargo terminal at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP). The goal is to provide a logistics solution for the Ceará and broader Northeastern markets, offering ocean freight, customs clearance, warehousing, and 24/7 transportation services.
According to the company, this is the first cold storage facility at the complex and is considered the most advanced of its kind in the state. The warehouse is expected to be especially useful for exporters who have had goods stuck due to the import tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“When goods arrive in small quantities, the market absorbs them. But when they arrive in large volumes, companies become hostage to extremely high costs to keep them inside containers. Our aim was to offer a logistics solution for importers and exporters so they can store products close to an outflow zone, further boosting the state’s economy.”
The initial phase is scheduled for delivery on September 9, with companies in the fruit, poultry, meat, and fish sectors expected to benefit the most. According to Thiago, the project is expected to generate around 80 direct jobs and 400 indirect jobs during its first phase.
Project spans 107,000 m² with capacity for 174,000 tonnes annually
The terminal will have the capacity to store up to 60,000 tonnes of chilled or frozen cargo per year. Including dry goods, total storage capacity reaches 174,000 tonnes annually.
The total area is 107,000 m², with 17,000 m² of constructed space. Of this, 9,800 m² are designated for dry and cold storage, and 7,200 m² for administrative facilities.
The site also includes 64,000 m² of open space for cargo that can be stored outdoors and 26,000 m² for maneuvering, parking, and loading docks.
Real-time remote monitoring of cargo
Clients of the terminal will be able to monitor warehouse and ante-chamber temperatures remotely and in real time. According to Thiago, the entire operation is controlled through real-time telemetry systems and includes advanced software to manage cold chambers. The warehouse also uses Warehouse Management System (WMS) technology, providing traceability, security, and transparency.
“The equipment allows customers to monitor telemetry in real time and even visually track their cargo. Our ante-chamber, where cargo is sorted, covers 1,500 m² and can receive up to 10 trucks unloading at the same time. It’s a first for the state of Ceará,” Thiago said.
Key facts about the Fracht Log terminal:
- Investment: R$ 105 million
- Direct jobs: 80
- Indirect jobs: 400
- Cold cargo capacity (annual): 60,000 tonnes
- Total annual storage capacity: 174,000 tonnes
- Total area: 107,000 m²
- Constructed area: 17,000 m²
Ceará’s potential recognized; expansion possible
The group sees Ceará as a strategic state for growing its business in Brazil and South America. According to Fracht Log’s general director, the region offers multiple economic and logistical advantages, such as the upcoming Transnordestina railway, the installation of a data center at the Pecém Port, and the Green Hydrogen Hub, also located within the complex.
Another major factor is Ceará’s geographic position, just a few days by sea from countries like the U.S., Spain, and the Netherlands.
Given this outlook, the company is considering expansion. “We’re seeing many sectors driving the state’s development and investments like this one. After delivering this first phase, we’ll begin paving a 54,000 m² area. In addition, we have another 101,000 m² that could be activated if we see natural growth in market demand,” he added.
