The Port of Açu and IKM Testing, part of Norway’s IKM Group, signed an agreement on October 29 (Wednesday) during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Brasil to create a consortium focused on providing decommissioning services.
The initiative aims to offer cleaning and decontamination services for offshore platforms and other units at the port-industrial complex located in São João da Barra, in northern Rio de Janeiro state.
The consortium builds on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two companies in May of this year.
“We seek strategic partnerships to complement the activities we already offer at Açu, such as temporary platform berthing. We are preparing to host Brazil’s first sustainable decommissioning hub,” said Vinicius Patel, Port Administration Director at the Port of Açu.
“IKM Testing plays a key role in developing the decommissioning hub, contributing extensive technical expertise in decontamination and NORM neutralization projects, with more than 35 operations conducted in the North Sea and Brazil. We bring to the project our commitment to safety and best ESG practices, reinforcing our goal of making this initiative both sustainable and efficient. Together with the Port of Açu and the entire production chain, we are working to strengthen the circular economy in Brazil’s oil and gas sector,” said Alexandre Villanova, Director of IKM Testing Brazil.
In addition to berthing, the Port plans to provide support services for the pre-dismantling and dismantling of platforms. The Port of Açu currently has docks capable of simultaneously serving more than three offshore units or vessels engaged in pre-decommissioning activities, with potential expansion to accommodate up to ten units.
Among the project’s competitive advantages are its proximity to the Campos Basin, environmental licensing, capacity to remove biofouling organisms such as sun coral, a unified control center for risk and emergency management, and integration with Brazil’s existing scrap logistics network.
