Week 202607

The Port of Imbituba delivered an exceptional performance in January 2026, handling more than 679,000 tonnes of cargo across 34 vessel calls — its strongest result ever for the first month of the year. The figures underscore the port’s upward trajectory as it continues to attract investment and expand its footprint within Brazil’s logistics corridors.

By cargo profile, exports totaled 251,400 tonnes, led by shipments of calcined coke, green petroleum coke and cornmeal. Imports reached 363,100 tonnes, driven primarily by bituminous coal, salt, petroleum coke and industrial inputs.

Cabotage volumes also increased, with 42,300 tonnes shipped and 9,300 tonnes discharged. Transshipment activity remained solid, totaling 9,000 tonnes loaded and 3,800 tonnes unloaded, reinforcing Imbituba’s role as a multimodal logistics platform and regional cargo redistribution hub.

Solid bulk remained the dominant segment, accounting for 531,800 tonnes — or 78.3% of total throughput. Key commodities included petroleum coke, soda ash, canola, bituminous coal, salt and cornmeal.

Containerized cargo continued its rapid expansion, representing 14.2% of total volume, or 96,200 tonnes, signaling the port’s growing ability to attract higher value-added cargo and diversify its operations mix.

The following is a breakdown of the primary containerized cargo handled at the Port of Imbituba throughout 2025. The data is provided by Datamar:

Breakbulk cargo accounted for 6.5% of throughput, totaling more than 44,000 tonnes.

One of the month’s highlights was the shipment of DDG to China. Dried Distillers Grains — a byproduct of corn ethanol production — are widely used in animal feed. In January, 62,500 tonnes of DDGS were exported by Impasa through the Port of Imbituba. The operation strengthens the port’s position in the global feed inputs market and broadens Santa Catarina’s export portfolio.

Data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services show that foreign trade operations through the Port of Imbituba totaled more than US$153 million in January alone, reinforcing its contribution to both the state and national trade balance.
