On Wednesday (May 28), the Port of Itajaí, located on the northern coast of Santa Catarina, received the world’s largest vehicle transport ship. The operation involved the unloading of 7,292 electric vehicles from Chinese automaker BYD, marking the largest electric vehicle operation ever conducted in Brazil, according to port authorities.
The ship, named BYD Shenzhen, was explicitly designed for this route and is making its maiden voyage to Brazil.
Following the docking maneuvers, unloading of the vehicle began at 1 p.m. using a Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) operation. This method allows vehicles to drive on and off the ship via ramps, eliminating the need for cranes or hoisting equipment.
According to the Santa Catarina terminal, this technique ensures greater efficiency in the vehicle removal process.
“It’s a common method used on ships specifically designed for vehicle transport,” the port administration explained.
The operation involved a total of 130 car carrier trucks and over 500 professionals. The ground team included 10 dockworkers and 18 drivers to ensure smooth logistics.
