The Port of Itajaí received the vessel Grande Shanghai on Wednesday (27), carrying 4,585 vehicles from Chinese automaker BYD. The vessel berthed at 5:30 p.m., with operations beginning at 7 p.m.

The operation is being carried out by JBS Terminais and builds on the Port of Itajaí’s role as a strategic facility for large-scale automotive operations in Brazil, especially for high-value-added cargo.

In all, two BYD operations are planned at the Port of Itajaí, totaling approximately 11,700 vehicles. The first took place this Wednesday, with the Grande Shanghai bringing 4,585 units. The second is scheduled for mid-June, when the BYD Changsha is expected to arrive with about 7,200 vehicles.

Before the arrival of the Grande Shanghai, the Port of Itajaí had already handled 2,928 vehicles in ro-ro operations in 2026. With the two BYD calls, the terminal is expected to reach approximately 14,713 vehicles handled in this type of operation in the year to date.

The operation will involve about 150 workers and around 90 car carrier trucks to transport the vehicles. Work will be carried out continuously under a logistics plan designed to ensure fast unloading, operational safety and smooth cargo flow.

For Port of Itajaí Superintendent Artur Antunes Pereira, the operation confirms the strength of the federal public port in large automotive calls.

“The arrival of the Grande Shanghai, with 4,585 BYD vehicles, shows the Port of Itajaí’s ability to carry out large-scale operations safely, efficiently and with planning. The operation will be conducted by JBS Terminais and reinforces market confidence in Itajaí’s federal public port,” he said.

In 2025, the Port of Itajaí had already handled approximately 8,000 BYD vehicles, consolidating the automaker’s presence at the terminal. Now, with around 11,700 units expected in 2026, the port is expanding its share of automotive operations and reaffirming its strategic position in vehicle logistics in Brazil.
