In yet another record-breaking milestone this year, the Port of Itaqui handled approximately 3.6 million tonnes of cargo in May 2025 — marking the best performance ever recorded for that month in the port’s history. The volume surpassed the previous May record of 3.35 million tons set in 2023.
Year-to-date, Itaqui has already moved 13.81 million tonnes, representing an 11.8% increase compared to the same period last year and 9% above the volume projected in its annual operational plan.
Key Highlights by Cargo Type:
- General Cargo: Pulp handling reached 182,000 tonnes — 30% above the target for the month and 60% higher than in May 2024.
- Dry Bulk: Pig iron shipments totaled 120,000 tonnes, up 34% compared to the same month last year.
- Liquid Bulk – Petroleum Derivatives (transshipment): Ship-to-ship operations moved 316,000 tonnes — 50% above projections and 333% higher than in May 2024.
- Liquid Bulk – Derivatives for Domestic Market (tank storage): A total of 468,000 tonnes were handled, 8% above planned volume and 19% higher than last May.
In the liquid bulk segment, average monthly productivity exceeded targets. Among the products moved, diesel stood out, accounting for 75% of total volume, followed by gasoline at 19%. In terms of operators, Transpetro led the activity, handling 85% of the cargo, followed by Granel Química with 11% and Ultracargo with 4%.
“Another month of growth for our port. These figures are the result of the collective effort of port operators and investors who believe in Maranhão’s potential, strengthening the strategic role of the Port of Itaqui in Brazil’s logistics landscape,” said Carlos Roberto Frisoli, Itaqui’s Operations Director.
The port’s growing efficiency and operational capacity continue to attract investment and drive regional economic development. “Itaqui is already one of Brazil’s leading logistics and commercial hubs with both national and international significance. Every goal we exceed generates more development for our state,” added Acting President of the Port of Itaqui, Isa Mary Mendonça.
