August 2025 went down in history for the Port of Itaqui as the busiest month ever. With 3.85 million tonnes handled, the port exceeded August 2024’s performance by 7% and came in 8.9% above the monthly target. In July this year, Itaqui had already set a record, confirming the steady improvement of operations month after month.
From January to August 2025, the port moved 24.9 million tonnes, an 8% increase compared with the same period in 2024 and 5% above target. “Itaqui’s continued performance reflects the efficiency of operations and the commitment of professionals who build this port with excellence every day. Together, we continue connecting Maranhão to the world and strengthening our strategic role,” said acting president of the Port of Itaqui, Isa Mary Mendonça.
Soybeans in focus
Dry bulk handling stood out, surpassing the 3-million-tonne mark. The main driver was soybeans (+9%), with 1.73 million tonnes moved. Other products such as fertilizers (+21%), pig iron (+9%) and copper (+10%) also contributed to the result.
Liquid bulk on the rise
The liquid bulk segment also delivered strong results, with 751,000 tonnes handled, up 12% from August 2024 and 8.7% above plan. Of that, bonded market operations totaled 345,000 tonnes, a 116% jump over last year. Ship-to-ship operations at berths 106 and 108 were key to this outcome.
“We exceeded all expectations in August. From the quayside to the administrative offices, every internal flow is monitored with precision to reach these figures. It is the constant pursuit of excellence that drives the port’s progress,” highlighted Itaqui’s operations director, Carlos Frisoli.
