The Norwegian-flagged vessel Star Norge berthed at the Port of Paranaguá on Wednesday (13) to load 14,200 tonnes of pulp. The ship, which is on its maiden voyage that began in March, left the Chinese shipyard where it was built that same month and is the first vessel in G2 Ocean’s fleet prepared to use alternative fuels.
At 225 meters long, Star Norge is the operator’s largest vessel, with capacity to carry up to 82,000 tonnes. The ship’s arrival was celebrated by the companies involved in the operation and by the Portos do Paraná administration.
“The investments made to deepen the access channel and the ongoing maintenance dredging campaigns allow larger vessels to operate at Paraná’s ports. This increases export capacity, improves competitiveness and reduces logistics costs,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.
Angelo Spinelli, G2 Ocean’s operations director for South America, said the cranes on this model can handle heavier cargoes. Another difference is the vessel’s holds, which can accommodate larger volumes of goods compared with conventional ships.
“This is the first in a series of 10 vessels acquired by G2 Ocean, with the aim of expanding pulp transport in a sustainable and cost-effective way,” he said.
To mark the vessel’s arrival, Gabriel Vieira, port operations director at Portos do Paraná, presented Captain Romeo Bautista with a plaque bearing the public company’s coat of arms, officially recording the call at Paranaguá.
“The first voyage of a vessel loaded in Paranaguá is a source of pride for all of us. It represents the result of dedication, commitment and, above all, the trust of the companies that operate at our ports,” Vieira said.
Loading operations in Paranaguá were completed on Thursday night (14). The vessel, which is joining a pulp transport route, sailed to the Port of Santos and will later head to Asia.
