Port of Pecém to offer shore power for docked vessels from September

The Port of Pecém, located in Ceará state, will begin offering Pecém shore power services in September, allowing docked vessels to receive electricity from the onshore grid.

The infrastructure is being installed at the port’s Multipurpose Terminal, known as TMUT, and will allow ships connected to the system to use electricity supplied from land while they remain at berth. As a result, vessels will be able to reduce the use of diesel-powered auxiliary engines during port stays.

The project also includes electrical infrastructure for mobile harbor cranes, or MHCs, which are used in cargo loading and unloading operations. The upgrade will expand the use of electricity in port equipment that currently runs on diesel.

The port already supplies electricity to docked tugboats, and the new structure is expected to extend that service to other terminal operations.

According to the Pecém Complex, the implementation of shore power is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 796 metric tons per year. Around 65% of port operations are already electrified and use certified renewable energy, including cranes used to handle containers and steel plates, as well as conveyor belts.

The Pecém shore power project is part of a broader set of initiatives aimed at electrifying port operations, reducing emissions and expanding the use of clean energy at the Pecém Complex in Ceará state.
