The Port of Recife will undergo a modernization project with an investment of approximately US$19.7 million in dredging to increase its capacity to accommodate larger vessels. The project includes deepening access channels, enabling safer, more efficient operations.
The work will deepen the maritime access routes to a minimum depth of 39 feet and expand both the access channel and the turning basin, facilitating the maneuvering of large commercial vessels.
Key features of the project:
* Capacity to receive vessels up to 689 feet in length;
* Access channel with an operational draft of approximately 35 feet;
* Turning basin with a diameter of about 1,640 feet.
Construction began in March 2026 and is expected to be completed by May 2027.
The project also includes continuous environmental monitoring to minimize impacts on marine ecosystems during dredging operations. Oversight activities will focus on sediment dispersion, local marine fauna conditions, and the management of disposal areas.
With the infrastructure upgrade, the port expects to reduce logistics costs, increase cargo throughput, and strengthen both foreign trade and coastal shipping operations. The cruise sector is also expected to benefit, with improved conditions for accommodating large passenger vessels.
