Port of Santos extends tariff discounts for “Green Ships” and cabotage vessels

The Santos Port Authority (APS), the Brazilian government-owned company responsible for the public infrastructure of the Port of Santos, has extended for 120 days the tariff discounts granted since 2023 to so-called “green ships” and vessels with a higher calling frequency at the Port of Santos.
Discounts for green ships are granted to vessels registered and positively rated under the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These discounts can reach up to 15% and apply to the use of waterway access infrastructure, which is charged based on the vessel’s gross tonnage.
Offering discounts to environmentally efficient vessels is one of the key measures APS has adopted to address climate-related risks. According to IMO data, the maritime sector accounts for 80% of global trade and 3% of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making the transformation of ports essential to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, the international treaty adopted in 2015 to reduce GHG emissions and limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The Port of Santos aims to lead the energy transition within Brazil’s waterborne transport sector.
Meanwhile, discounts for frequent callers are granted based on the vessel’s number of port calls during the 12 months preceding the month of berthing. The discount is applied to Item 2 of Table 1 – Waterway Access Infrastructure Charges and distinguishes between deep-sea and cabotage vessels.
Deep-sea vessels may receive discounts of up to 55%, while cabotage vessels may receive discounts of up to 60%, in both cases when the vessel records 48 or more calls at the Port of Santos.
The extensions will take effect on June 10.
