The Port of Santos is now officially the largest container port in Latin America. The complex has taken the lead in the Lloyd’s List ranking—the most prestigious in the industry—surpassing Colón, at the Panama Canal, and other international giants such as the ports of Valencia (Spain), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Piraeus (Greece), and Dalian (China).
As the only Brazilian port among the world’s top 100, Santos climbed six positions compared to the previous edition, rising from 43rd to 37th place. The data refers to 2024, when the complex handled 5.4 million TEUs, a 14.7% increase over 2023 (4.7 million TEUs).
“The Port of Santos was already the largest port complex in Latin America. Now this leadership is confirmed in container handling, establishing the complex as an international benchmark in efficiency and management,” said Anderson Pomini, president of the Santos Port Authority (APS).
“And we will keep growing. With Tecon 10 alone, the Santos will increase its container capacity by 50%,” he added.
Growth trend
In July 2025, container throughput set a new monthly record at the Port of Santos, with 534,600 TEUs—an 8.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Year-to-date volume reached 3.3 million TEUs, up 7.9% over the first seven months of the previous year.
This upward trend extends to all cargo types. July 2025 was also the best month in history for total cargo handled, with 17.4 million tonnes compared to 16.4 million tonnes in July 2024.
