The Port of Santos surpassed the 17 million-tonne mark of cargo handled for the first time this July across its terminals in the port complex.

The figures indicate a resurgence in exports following the U.S. announcement of 50% tariffs on Brazilian products. This development may have contributed to the record performance.

In recent days, there has been a notable uptick in vessel traffic departing for Europe and the United States.

Solid bulk shipments (including various grains) rose by 10% in July, reaching 900,000 tonnes. Containerized cargo grew by 4%, totaling 200,000 tonnes, while breakbulk cargo increased by 9%, reaching 85,000 tonnes. There is also an expected 10% rise in liquid bulk (fuels, solvents, etc.), although those figures have yet to be finalized.

“This data confirms what we had already observed in the first half of the month — a significant increase in shipments from the port,” said Anderson Pomini, president of the Santos Port Authority (APS). “These are still preliminary numbers, but this ‘record of records’ underscores Santos’ strategic importance in pivotal historical moments such as this one,” Pomini added.

Final statistics are still being compiled, as the Port of Santos — the largest port complex in Latin America — includes more than 50 terminals, each with a set deadline to report data to APS. However, operational monitoring has already confirmed the record volume.

“This is an all-time record that attests to the resilience and efficiency of the Port of Santos. Despite external crises and a channel closure due to weather conditions, there was growth without any incidents in the access routes throughout July,” Pomini concluded.
