Port of São Francisco do Sul concession extended to 2061 to back channel deepening

The delegation of the Port of São Francisco do Sul to the government of Santa Catarina has been extended until 2061. This adds 25 years to the concession period from 2036, when the current term—signed in the previous extension valid since 2011—was set to expire. The ordinance, signed by the Ministry of Ports and the state government, along with Antaq and SCPar, was published this week. The extension is linked to the financing model for the deepening of the external channel of Babitonga Bay.
The Port of São Francisco do Sul has been delegated by the federal government to the state since its founding in 1955. Since 2017, its management has been under SCPar, also linked to the state. The new extension, now confirmed, began to be discussed last year, when the financing model for the deepening of the Babitonga channel—providing access to the ports of São Francisco do Sul and Itapoá—was defined.
Under the model established to fund the dredging works, which will allow access for larger cargo ships, the Port of Itapoá will cover the costs through an advance on port fees paid to the Port of São Francisco do Sul, the port authority of the complex. Repayment will occur over about 12 years after the completion of the works. The dredging, already tendered, has an estimated cost of R$324 million and is in the executive project stage, with construction set to begin by early 2026.
The longer concession term provides greater security for the agreement between the two ports, as the same port authority—the Port of São Francisco do Sul—will remain in place until the end of the contract.
