The Port of São Francisco do Sul presented investments made between 2023 and 2026 during the International Port Performance Congress (Cidesport), held in Florianópolis, in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. During a panel titled “Port Management: Successful Practices and Experiences,” port president Cleverton Vieira detailed projects involving landside and waterside infrastructure.

According to the figures presented, investments total R$558 million and include infrastructure improvements, equipment modernization, port security and technology. Among the projects is the deepening of the access channel to Babitonga Bay, which began in 2025 and was completed in October 2026. Sediment removed during dredging was reused for beach nourishment at Itapoá Beach. The project received a R$300 million loan from Porto Itapoá, to be repaid within ten years.

Another ongoing project involves widening a 1.4-kilometer stretch of the federal highway providing access to the port, with an investment of R$8.3 million. In 2025, R$71 million was allocated to modernizing equipment used in export operations.

In 2024, reported investments totaled R$45 million, directed toward information technology and navigational safety. The previous year, in 2023, investments reached R$25 million, primarily for infrastructure improvements, including the opening of a new port access gate.

Port of São Francisco do Sul Reports Growth in Cargo Throughput

According to Cleverton Vieira, cargo throughput increased by approximately 39% between 2022 and 2025. “These measures represent progress in the infrastructure and operational capacity of the Port of São Francisco. We are expanding and modernizing our landside and waterside infrastructure, investing in equipment, security and technology, while also improving access routes. These initiatives create the conditions to accommodate the expansion of port activity, meet Santa Catarina’s logistics needs and support growth in operations over the coming years,” he said.

The port also reported an increase in annual cargo throughput during the period, handling 16.8 million metric tons in 2023, 17 million in 2024 and 17.5 million in 2025, according to figures released by the port administration.

Cidesport is organized by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in partnership with the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Unisul) and the University of Valencia in Spain. The congress brings together industry representatives to discuss issues related to port management, performance and the development of port operations.

Other figures presented by the port administration included the port’s handling of 50% of Brazil’s steel imports and 80% of the soybeans exported from Santa Catarina. The port also reported that it ranks among Brazil’s ten largest public ports in general cargo throughput and holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications.
