Port workers blocked the entrance to the Port of Maceió on Wednesday morning (17) in the Jaraguá neighborhood, in the capital of Alagoas. The action is a protest against proposed changes to the wage agreement.
In an interview with Pajuçara FM radio, Jabson Levino, president of the port workers’ union, explained that the protest stems from negotiations with port management over salary adjustments and demands for lower health plan deductions.
“The Port of Maceió offered us a proposal based on the INPC of around 5.20%, and the government does not want to grant the full INPC, since it is almost inflation. Another issue is the health plan […] they are forcing us to pay 50% of the plan’s cost, almost 1,000% more than in Rio Grande do Norte,” Jabson said.
According to the union president, this would be a “warning strike,” and at 10 a.m., protesters would reassess whether they would leave the port entrance.
“We are trying to avoid greater damage. If it continues, we will stage a strike next Wednesday, involving passengers and other complex cargoes.”
TNH1 contacted the Port of Maceió administration and is awaiting an official statement on the matter.
