Porto Sudeste, a private port terminal located in the city of Itaguaí, has once again received the 2024 Pró-Clima Seal in the diamond category — the highest level awarded by the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization (ABDP). The certification recognizes companies that demonstrate transparency in carbon emissions, have clear decarbonization goals, and show proven emission reductions.

Between 2021 and 2024, the terminal achieved a significant reduction of nearly 80% in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from scopes 1 and 2, decreasing from 8,174 tonnes of CO₂e to 2,112 tonnes of CO₂e, based on the market-based approach.

The result stems from the implementation of several initiatives developed from a strategic mapping based on the Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory, a tool that identifies and quantifies emission sources within the industrial complex. This analysis — conducted since the terminal began operations in 2015 — enables the measurement of environmental impacts and the direction of mitigation actions that generate tangible contributions to combating climate change.

According to Ulisses Oliveira, Porto Sudeste’s Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, the recognition is meaningful for the logistics and port sector as a whole. He emphasized that the industry has been playing a decisive role in addressing climate change through environmental responsibility and transparency regarding the impacts of its operations.

“Of course, being recognized is important for us. But above all, these seals show we are on the right track — implementing actions that truly make a difference in building a future for the logistics sector that increasingly values the balance between development, people’s well-being, and environmental preservation,” said Ulisses. “Many of the solutions we apply in our daily operations can be replicated not only in port terminals but also in other industries,” he added.

For example, Ulisses cited a simple yet impactful measure: replacing gasoline with ethanol in the company’s flex-fuel vehicles. This initiative, aimed at reducing scope 1 emissions, prevented the release of 9.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide between May 2024 and April 2025, and has since become a routine operational practice.

“We opted for ethanol in fueling our vehicles and have already tested electric vehicles, trucks, and loaders, achieving gains in availability and productivity. Still, some challenges remain, such as electrical infrastructure and acquisition costs — issues we continue to face with planning and innovation,” he concluded.

About the Diamond Seal

The diamond-level seal is granted by the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization (ABDP) only to companies that meet strict criteria, such as preparing a complete GHG Emissions Inventory covering scopes 1, 2, and 3 in line with GHG Protocol standards; submitting a Decarbonization Plan with defined targets; and demonstrating effective annual emission reductions through a detailed report.
