PortosRio Begins Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory for the Ports of Rio de Janeiro and Itaguaí

Last week, PortosRio welcomed a team of experts and consultants for a technical visit to the Ports of Rio de Janeiro and Itaguaí. The initiative aims to identify sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in port operations—an initial step toward developing the company’s first emissions inventory.

This initiative marks an important milestone in PortosRio’s journey toward aligning its operations with the best international ESG (environmental, social, and governance) practices. The GHG inventory will serve as a strategic tool for diagnosing the environmental impacts of port activities and for setting concrete guidelines to reduce emissions and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

At the Port of Rio de Janeiro, Fernanda Sasaoka, PortosRio’s Socio-Environmental Responsibility Manager, led the visit with the support of team members Handley de Abreu and Marcos Lins. At the Port of Itaguaí, Cíntia Castro, Operations Oversight Manager, welcomed the team alongside Fernanda Sasaoka.

UNESCO and Ecofinance are carrying out the technical consultancy, applying internationally recognized methodologies. During the visits, operational areas were assessed, including logistics flows, cargo handling, internal traffic, and equipment usage. This allowed for a detailed analysis of both ports’ main carbon emission sources.

According to the consultants, “an emissions inventory is like a snapshot: it reveals the emission sources and guides where and how to begin the decarbonization process. It also uses a standardized, globally comparable methodology, which ensures credibility and transparency throughout the process.”

For PortosRio CEO Francisco Martins, the project represents a groundbreaking legacy for the Brazilian port sector: “The partnership between PortosRio and UNESCO is in full swing and marks a historic moment for the industry.
