Rain in Argentina affects Brazil’s onion imports

In March this year, Brazil imported 23,000 tonnes of onions, an increase from the same month last year. Most of that volume came from Argentina, which accounted for about 73% of Brazilian imports.

Even so, heavy rains in the neighboring country are causing flooding in the main producing areas that supply exports to Brazil. The climate-related disruption is affecting both the quantity and quality of the harvest.

According to Cepea, the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics, producers and exporters in Chile now have an opportunity to increase their share of the Brazilian market. In the coming days, imports are expected to rise as domestic supply tightens and the quality of local produce declines.
