Rains ease water pressure at the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is beginning to loosen restrictions after months of tightening, raising both allowable draft and daily transit capacity as rainfall improves the outlook for Gatun Lake.
From October 15, the canal will increase neopanamax transits to 10 a day, taking combined neopanamax and panamax capacity to 33 daily slots. The maximum authorised draft for neopanamax vessels has also been increased immediately to 14.94 m, or 49 ft.
The move marks a notable reversal from the defensive measures introduced through the summer as a strengthening El Niño and weak rainfall revived memories of the severe 2023-24 drought.
The pressure on the canal has been amplified this year by unusually strong demand for passages. Middle East disruption has encouraged Asian buyers to source more energy from the US Gulf, helping push Panama traffic close to capacity and driving fierce competition for guaranteed passage.
The next 10 days look wet enough to be supportive for Gatun Lake, with rain or thunderstorms forecast every day around Gatún itself. The standout is tomorrow, when meteoblue currently has more than 20 mm of rain, followed by several 10–20 mm days.
