Rains helps Argentina’s corn planting during export policy uncertainties

Rains in central Argentina have helped farmers plant 23.2% of the planned 2021/22 corn acreage, the Buenos Aires stock exchange stated on October 14th, at the same time as growers struggle with a new export policy they say could force them to plant less.

Major corn-producing provinces such as Córdoba are enjoying good soil moisture, the stock exchange said in its weekly report.

Argentina is the world’s second-largest corn exporter, after the United States

Corn exports remain “open” despite a policy announced last week that prioritizes crops already harvested over future sales for the next crop, the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Of the 55 million tons of corn expected to be harvested this season, a record 38.5 million has been sold as producers race to secure high international prices as farm costs are pressured by high inflation.
