Santa Catarina’s eighth port takes another step toward becoming reality. The project will be presented in a public hearing next Wednesday, December 10, when residents of Itapoá and the surrounding region will be able to learn more about TUP Coamo (Coamo Private Use Terminal). This project plans to begin operations in 2030 and handle 11 million tonnes per year.
The hearing will be held in person, starting at 7 p.m., at the Associação Comunitária do Pontal do Norte e da Figueira do Pontal, in the Pontal do Norte neighborhood, and aims to present the project and discuss the Rima (Environmental Impact Report).
The project calls for an investment of R$3 billion in an area of 43 hectares, with three berths. The facility has been under study in the region for years. It will be used to handle solid and liquid bulk cargo, including soybeans, corn, fertilizers, and petroleum derivatives such as LPG.
Located near the current Port of Itapoá, the new terminal seeks to ease the flow of agricultural production in Southern Brazil. Coamo, the largest agro-industrial cooperative in the country, states that the project will address logistical bottlenecks at ports in Paraná and increase the competitiveness of exports.
The expectation is that construction will generate around 2,000 jobs, and that operations will create approximately 1,000 permanent positions. The project is under review in the State’s environmental licensing process.
