The Santos Port Authority signed a contract on Friday, June 12, to deepen the navigation channel at the Port of Santos to 16 meters, a project aimed at meeting shipping market demands and expanding the capacity of Brazil’s largest port complex.
APS President Anderson Pomini said the investment, valued at nearly R$620 million, is part of the port’s expansion plan and will allow more modern cargo vessels to access terminals more easily, increasing productivity and reducing costs.
The channel will be deepened for the first time in 14 years. The last major dredging project increased the depth to 15 meters. Since then, vessels have grown in size and require greater draft.
With the project, APS aims to provide better infrastructure for users of the port complex.
Jan De Nul do Brasil will carry out the work. The contract is worth R$617.9 million and covers a five-year period. It also includes maintenance dredging to preserve the new channel depth for two years.
